What are the education reforms in Rwanda?

Rwanda has undergone significant education reforms in recent years, aiming to improve access to quality education for all its citizens. One of the key initiatives has been the provision of fee-free basic education, ensuring that children have the opportunity to attend school without financial barriers. This policy has greatly increased enrollment rates across the country, allowing more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to access education.

Another important reform is the introduction of a competence-based curriculum, which focuses on equipping students with practical skills that are relevant to the job market. This shift from a traditional, theory-heavy curriculum to one that emphasizes skills and competencies is designed to better prepare students for the workforce and improve employability. It encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, essential skills for success in the modern world.

In addition to these changes, Rwanda has been working on improving equity in education. This includes initiatives to reduce disparities between rural and urban areas, as well as addressing gender inequalities. The government has also been investing heavily in expanding infrastructure, building more schools and classrooms to accommodate the growing number of students. Furthermore, a comprehensive assessment system has been implemented to monitor student progress and the effectiveness of the new curriculum.
